Privacy Policy

Introduction

By using myorigins.org you agree to the following. Any use of myorigins.org is subject to compliance with our terms of use and our privacy policy, so please read them carefully. If you do not agree with this, then please do not use our service.

This privacy policy informs users of myorigins.org (including all subdomains) about the general categories of personal data that are recorded and processed by this website and its administration as well as the purposes and legal basis for recording and processing of personal data by the website operator. In this policy, "we" refers to the website operator, Eric Plum.

We are committed to the privacy of users of our website and we handle any personal information in accordance with the law. Technological advances, further development of this website and changes in legal requirements can result in changes to this privacy policy at any time. Therefore, we recommend that you read it regularly.

The terms "personal data" and "processing" are defined in Article 4 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The term "users" refers to the users of the website myorigins.org (including all subdomains).

Access Data

The webserver hosting our website automatically stores access data for the purposes of legitimate security interests according to GDPR Article 6(1)f. Such data may include the accessed site, access time, number of bytes sent, referral source, your browser, your operating system and your IP-address. Access data is stored for security reasons, e.g. to allow investigations of misuse of the website.

Enquiry Data

If you contact us, then we will store your message including associated information (e.g. your name, e-mail address, headers and any attachments) for the purpose of processing and responding to your request. We will not share this information with third parties without your permission unless there is a legal requirement to do so.

Family Tree Data: royal.myorigins.org and de-royal.myorigins.org

The royal example family tree uses publically available personal information of monarchs and their immediate and extended family members in the public interest according to GDPR Article 6(1)e and for the purposes of our legitimate interests according to GDPR Article 6(1)f. This includes information such as names, dates and places of birth, death and marriage, professions, residences, images and kinship. Such information is of public interest due to its historical importance and, in case of currently ruling royal families, it is also of societal importance. We store and process this information for the purpose of visualizing it in the form of a family tree and we believe that this is in the public interest as it contributes to educating the public. This also serves our legitimate interest of presenting an example of a myorigins.org family tree that is of general interest to potential customers, who may then choose to sign up for their own myorigins.org family tree. The royal example family tree only contains information that is readily available in the public domain, e.g. on Wikipedia.

Family Tree Data: Any other Family Trees

Myorigins.org family trees other than the royal example family tree use personal data according to GDPR Article 6(1)a. This includes information such as names, dates and places of birth, death and marriage, professions, residences, images and kinship. We store and process this information for the purpose of visualizing it in the form of a family tree and tree administrators and tree contributors provide such personal information for this purpose. It is the responsibility of tree administrators and tree contributors to ensure that they have all necessary consents before providing personal information of others. By default, personal information of people born before 1900 will be public, while access to personal information of people born thereafter will require a tree user account created by the tree administrator. Dates of birth that have not been entered will be estimated. More restrictive and more open settings are available. It is the responsibility of the tree administrator to get all required consents before making personal information of others publically available.

Information about Login Events

Myorigins.org family trees store information about login events for the purposes of our legitimate interests of managing our website and legitimate security interests according to GDPR Article 6(1)f. The data includes user name, time of first login, time of last login and number of logins. It is stored and processed in order to allow the myorigins.org team to identify family trees that are not being used, to allow family tree administrators to identify user accounts of their tree that are not being used and to allow excessive use of user accounts to be identified. The latter would indicate that the user's login details may have ended up in the public domain, which would have serious data protection implications and would be dealt with according to our terms of use.

Google Maps

This website uses the service "Google Maps" for the purpose of our legitimate interest of making our family trees more useful to our users according to GDPR Article 6(1)f and based on consent according to GDPR Article 6(1)a. In family trees that contain address information, we use Google Maps to show addresses that are relevant to the family tree on maps.

To achieve this, address information is sent to a Google server to obtain corresponding coordinates. These coordinates are used together with the name and dates (e.g. birth, marriage and death) of the associated person and a link to the person's family tree page in order to mark and label the address on maps. This information may be transmitted to Google. By adding address information to a family tree, you give consent to the personal data being used in this way (according to GDPR Article 6(1)a) and you confirm that you have any required consents of others.
